Drowned.

          In Baz Luhrmann Romeo and Juliet, he repeatedly uses the symbol of water throughout the whole film. I think that water represents a mix of different things. This includes sensuality, peace, and representations of religious aspects.

          In the movie, Tybalt's death was suspenseful, and so was the weather. Tybalt wasn't stabbed immediately, and before he was stabbed, the weather increased more and more in it's storm-like essence. Before he died, wind picked up, the clouds became darker, and you began to feel more and more that rain was coming. However, rain did not start until after Tybalt's death. In fact, the image focused on the bullet as the rain began to pour down. It was as if the rain represented washing ones sins away in that scene. This was very similar to what baptism means and what it is supposed to represent.

          Throughout the film, Luhrmann relies less on the physicality of sensuality, but language and visual representations of it. I believe that water was used to represent sensuality as well. When Romeo and Juliet were first to meet, they are separated by a tank. The water in the tank physically distorts them- by magnifying them. This can be a symbol and an explanation to their love and how they loved one another instantly and also how their love was so strong when they first met.

          Another reference to religion; Saint John demanded people to be baptized which was supposed to cleanse on of their sin. The baptism allowed people to be "set free" in a sense and realize many things, which was typically what Romeo & Juliet did by falling in love, despite their last names. This showed acceptance, and them being set free of their hateful bonds.

         

          When we first meet Juliet, she is face down in the sink. She is wearing no makeup, her eyes are open, and she is seemingly very peaceful. This represents her innocence, and almost her secret escape from everything. This is so because while her head is underwater, her house maid is running around screaming her name and everyone is going crazy, getting ready for the party. While she is underwater, she can see or hear them. This is yet another example of water symbolizing peace and tranquility. 

          Adding onto what I said above, we also see Romeo in that same position, head under water. This is after he comes up from the party, and is obviously overwhelmed and simply exhausted. This is a subtle link representing their similarity. Not to mention directly after that, he meets Juliet, separated by water.

          There are many more examples and other symbolic things water may represent, but those are just a few.Not just in movies, but in life, water is symbolic of cleanliness. Water is supposed to be pure, and it is used to detox your body; Hence water fasts. Throughout the movie, water can also be scary, hence Tybalt's death scene.
